Welcome to the webpage for the Gravitational Waves Hands-on Workshop 2025, an intensive program revolving around a hands-on project, to learn more about gravitational waves and foster collaborations 💪! You will find here links, documents and contacts for the smooth execution of the workshop.
Bullet-point summary
Theme: Gravitational waves, and beyond!
Goals:
Teach students gravitational wave concepts and give them the tooling to study them
Foster collaboration and network awareness in East-Asia
To whom: 12 enthusiastic early career scientists.
When: from the 27th of November to the 1st of December.
Where: at The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Requirements
⚠️ Be sure to bring in your own laptop ⚠️
Basic knowledge of general relativity
Basic knowledge of cosmology
Basic knowledge of gravitational waves and their detection process
Good knowledge of Python programming
Hands-on project description
Title: Correlating distributions of gravitational wave (GW) sources with γ-ray bursts (GRBs) and galaxies
Goals:
Learn how to get the localization data of GW sources, galaxies and GRBs
Learn how to test for correlations between GWs, GRBs and galaxies, across various parameters (e.g., the sky localization, the GWs event masses, the galaxy size, etc…)
Develop tests for anisotropy in the catalogue of GWs, GRBs and/or galaxies.
*”Welcoming”: Each day will start with a short welcoming session, with a slow start, perhaps a drink ☕, and a short briefing before diving in gravitational waves 🤿.
A big and sincere “Thank you!” to everyone involved, without whom this workshop would not have been possible. These include: Elwin K. Y. Li, Helen Xian, Isaac Wong, Laura Uronen, Matteo Lulli, Peony K. K. Lai, Samson H. W. Leong, Samuel Lange, Souvik Jana & Yanyan Zheng.
